A 2-year-old boy suffered a broken hand from jumping on a baggage conveyor belt at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that landed him in a luggage room.

Fox News and the Atlanta Journal Constitution report the incident occurred Monday afternoon.

"Officers with Atlanta Police and Atlanta Fire and Rescue responded to an incident at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Monday afternoon involving a small child who accessed the automated baggage screening system via the Spirit Airlines ticket counter," the airport told Fox News in a statement. “The child was transported to a local hospital for observation and treatment. The Transportation Security Administration and other partners are also assisting with the investigation into the incident.”

The airline told the Associated Press says the closed counter wasn’t staffed at the time.

USA TODAY has reached out to Spirit Airlines for comment.

The boy’s mother, Edith Vega, told local TV station WSB-TV that she had set her son Lorenzo down while printing her boarding pass, and when she looked up, he was on the conveyor belt.

“When I tried to go after him, it was at the end of the machine,” Vega said. “I couldn’t even catch up... I wanted to jump in and try to go get him, but they didn’t allow me. I was just freaking out.”

An Atlanta police report says a TSA worker alerted authorities after finding Lorenzo in the bag room with a broken right hand.

Spirit Airlines says it’s working with TSA and airport officials to ensure proper protocol was followed.
