The US House judiciary committee has voted to advance two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, setting the stage for Mr Trump to become only the third president in US history to be impeached. After more than a day of deliberations, the judiciary committee voted 23-17 along party lines on Friday in favour of articles of impeachment charging the president with abusing his power and obstructing Congress. The resolution paves the way for the full House of Representatives to vote on the charges next week. Mr Trump is accused of trying to solicit foreign interference in the 2020 elections by pressuring the Ukrainian president to launch an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden and to probe a discredited theory that Ukraine, rather than Russia, had interfered in the 2016 presidential race. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House, had on Thursday called the articles of impeachment “very powerful” and “very strong”. “The public thinks that they should be determining who the president of the United States is, not some foreign power,” Ms Pelosi said. “They think that no one is above the law. We think, and so do they, that the president should be held accountable.” Mr Trump is widely expected to be impeached by the Democrat-controlled House, but is unlikely to be convicted and removed from office in an eventual trial in the Senate, which is controlled by Republicans. After the judiciary committee vote on Friday, Jerrold Nadler, the committee’s Democratic chair, called it a “sad and solemn day”, and said the House would “act expeditiously” on the charges.
