The first volcanic eruption in 50 years in the Canary Islands forced about 5,000 people, including about 500 tourists, to evacuate. The volcano erupted on Sunday, releasing hundreds of meters of lava into the air, swallowing homes and forests, and sending lava to the less populated Atlantic Ocean of La Palma, the northwestern island of the Canary Islands. No deaths have been reported, but the volcano was still active on Monday. Reuters reporters saw a large amount of smoke burning from volcanoes and homes. The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew to La Palma on Sunday to oversee rescue efforts.
