15-YEAR PATH OF SCIENTIFIC JOURNALISM IN ARMENIA

The Armenian Astronomical Society, under the leadership of the Founding member (1999), President (2001) and Co-President (2002) of ArAS, leading research associate and Head of Research Group, member of various international astrological societies, Head of Byurakan Observatory, astrophysicist, Dr. Areg Mikaelyan, regularly organizes gatherings of scientific journalists, where the questions of urgent interest of the discipline are presented to the scientific journalists and media representatives, and exhaustive research and coverage of the problems are expected from the participants in due time, mainly from the standpoint of scientific journalism. This time, Areg Mikayelyan began his speech by clarifying the significant role of the Internet for the development of scientific journalism. He presented what scientific journalism is, what are its tasks and work directions, what are the topics to be covered and how the material can be distributed on a global level, and also the means of distribution were dwelled upon. The development of the insights and strategies of scientific achievements, carried out through various discussions, forums, seminars, conferences, and publications, was mentioned as a primary issue. It is interesting that, as the speaker mentioned, the spread of science fiction films and even astrological horoscopes make a huge contribution to the spread of scientific data and achievements. Authors of Hard Science Fiction and Soft Science Fiction genres do a great job in presenting serious scientific achievements to the world. Filming of sci-fi films, distribution of sci-fi materials ensure the accessible transfer of scientific innovation to the public. The famous scientists - physicists, biologists, chemists, who were direct creators of the realm of science fiction - were presented by Dr. Areg Mikaelyan․ What is particularly important is that the creators of this genre are mostly world-famous scientists who started as authors of fantastic literature, then moved from social phenomena to presenting serious scientific gains, using the principle of accessibility. Both scientific journalists and scientific communication, the beginning of which is marked in 1950, emerged with the dedicated participation of advocates and purposeful functioning of scientific reporting. In this respect the works of the astrophysicist, philosopher Carl Sagan, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, and showman Neil Tyson in terms of bringing scientific achievements to the public were noted. Astronomical journalism in the international arena is mainly realized through websites, news releases, television, social media, scientific TV programs, games. It was noted that 8 possible directions for the dissemination of materials on astronomy include various forms of communication and are carried out through the World Federation of Science Journalists, constant communication with the public, astronomy competitions, including 15 during the year 2024 alone, through a grant approach. The first steps of scientific journalism in Armenia were realized thanks to popular scientific journals, stable growth was ensured through stable cooperation with the Union of Journalists, UNESCO, National Academy of Sciences of RA. The list of names of Armenian astronomers begins with Anania Shirakatsi, Victor Hambartsumyan, Elma Parsamyan and includes names of Diaspora-Armenian scientists like Alenoush Terian and others, who served world science throughout their lives. All funding sources and projects, grants, through which and thanks to which the development of astronomy in Armenia was possible, were specially mentioned. The dissemination of achievements in the field of astronomy is greatly facilitated by news reports, interviews, articles, through which the problems as well as linguistic and stylistic features of any discipline are formulated. After lunch there were visits to the telescopes in the Byurakan observatory and Victor Hambardzumyan's house museum, which we will present in our next report. Familiarity with observatory-related websites will help journalists specializing in scientific journalism to participate in the competition by the end of 2024 by studying and making available to the public at least 5 publications, which are indicated in the 50-item list as areas of urgent research. The work atmosphere was very positive and encouraging.
