The authorities of Sweden and Finland agree to the conditions of Turkey, which were put forward by Ankara in exchange for agreement on the entry of the two countries into NATO. Thus, they will cooperate with the Republic of Turkey in the fight against terrorism. In particular, they pledge not to support the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) banned in Turkey, as well as the organization of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen (FETO).
As reported in the office of the Turkish President, Sweden and Finland, following the results of the talks in Madrid, also pledged to withdraw from the embargo policy against the Turkish defense industry. For the sake of joining NATO, Sweden and Finland will amend their national legislation in the field of combating terrorism and the defense industry.
On Tuesday, Turkey, Sweden, Finland and NATO held talks in Madrid on the process of membership of Stockholm and Helsinki in the alliance. As a result, the alliance announced an agreement with the Turkish authorities on the admission of Sweden and Finland to NATO.
Helsinki, Stockholm and Ankara also signed a joint memorandum following the talks. Prior to this, Finland and Sweden submitted their applications to join the alliance to the NATO Secretary General. However, Turkey has blocked the start of the process of their consideration. In particular, Ankara demanded to stop supporting the PKK.
