Minister Asscher meets with Federation of Armenian Organisations (FAON)

The Hague, 23 May 2014 – On 22 May, a meeting took place between the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment Lodewijk Asscher, and representatives of the Federation of Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands (FAON) at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment in The Hague. FAON informed the Minister, who also has the integration portfolio, on the position of Armenians in Netherlands and problems the community is facing.

Armenians were already present in Amsterdam from the 17th century as merchants. They founded in 1714 the Armenian church of Amsterdam at the Krom Boomssloot, which has recently been refurbished and this year is celebrating its 300th anniversary. In the course of the 20th and 21th centuries the number of Armenians in Netherlands grew up by Armenian immigrants from Dutch East Indies, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Armenia, Azerbaijan and other former Soviet republics and recently from Syria. The present Armenian community in the Netherlands is now estimated about 20, 000 persons.

On one hand, the Armenian community has only little integration problems, as it appears from the book "Armenians in the Netherlands" published by FAON in 2008 on the basis of a government-funded and guided research.

However, the Armenian community has to deal with problems, particularly concerning the question of how in the Netherlands is dealt with the past and namely the Armenian Genocide. Despite the motion by Rouvoet in 2004 which includes the unanimous recognition by the Dutch Parliament of the Armenian Genocide and despite the widespread support and sympathy by large parts of the Dutch society, the government acts unduly reluctant, according to FAON. There is no active approach to combat denial of the Armenian Genocide as on the Internet, and as it is clear from the statements by the rector of the Islamic University in Rotterdam Ahmet Akgündüz, although the denial is a criminal offense. Besides some Turkish organisations recently start up protest actions and rallies whenever there is commemoration of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

During the meeting the FAON drew the attention of the Minister to and emphasised the fact that both in Turkey and in the Netherlands, there are many Turks and also Kurds being informed about the tragic history of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire almost 100 years ago, not only stay away from such protests and demonstrations, but on the contrary participate to the commemoration of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Furthermore, to avoid problems in the future, FAON asked to promote that in the context of history teaching the Armenian Genocide is also addressed. In addition FAON has highlighted the importance of teaching material for different levels of education and the presence of educational material about the different genocides including Armenian Genocide at the NIOD – Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

At the conclusion of the meeting it was agreed that in the near future close contacts will be held on the different topics, as well as on the ways that the Minister can express his involvement with the Armenian community.

Minister Asscher spreekt met Federatie Armeense Organisaties (FAON)

Den Haag 23 mei 2014 – Op het ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid (SZW) in Den Haag heeft op 22 mei een ontmoeting plaatsgevonden tussen de Minister van SZW Lodewijk Asscher en vertegenwoordigers van de Federatie van Armeense Organisaties in Nederland (FAON) . De FAON informeerde de Minister, die tevens Integratie in zijn portefeuille heeft, over de positie van Armeniërs in Nederland en de knelpunten, waar de gemeenschap mee worstelt.

De eerste Armeense gemeenschap was al vanaf de 17de eeuw in Amsterdam aanwezig rondom Armeense koopmannen en stichtte er in 1714 een Armeense kerk aan de Krom Boomssloot, die dit jaar in gerenoveerde vorm zijn 300 jaar bestaan viert. In de loop van de 20ste en 21ste eeuw groeide er in Nederland door Armeniërs uit achtereenvolgens Nederlands-Indië, Turkije, Iran, Irak, Armenië, Azerbeidzjan en andere voormalige Sovjet-republieken en thans uit Syrië een gemeenschap, die thans op een 20.000 personen geschat wordt.

Enerzijds kent de gemeenschap slechts in geringe mate integratieproblemen, zoals ook uit het onderzoek "Armeniërs in Nederland" bleek dat in 2008 door FAON is uitgegeven op basis van een door de overheid gefinancierd en begeleid onderzoek.

Toch heeft de Armeense gemeenschap te maken met problemen, met name daar waar het erom gaat hoe in Nederland met het verleden van de Armeense genocide wordt omgegaan. Ondanks de motie Rouvoet van 2004, die de unanieme erkenning door het parlement van de Armeense genocide inhield, en ondanks de brede steun en sympathie van grote delen van de Nederlandse samenleving, toont de regering zich, naar de mening van FAON, ten onrechte terughoudend. Er is geen actieve opstelling ter bestrijding van ontkenning van de Armeense genocide zoals op internet en zoals blijkt uit de uitlatingen van de rector van de Islamitische Universiteit in Rotterdam Ahmet Akgündüz, hoewel die ontkenning strafbaar is. Daarnaast is er, ook de laatste tijd weer, sprake van protest en demonstraties van de kant van sommige Turkse organisaties, zodra sprake is de herdenking van de slachtoffers van de Armeense genocide.

In het gesprek heeft de FAON hier de aandacht van de Minister voor gevraagd en benadrukt dat zowel in Turkije als in Nederland veel Turken en ook Koerden zich, nadat zij kennis hebben genomen van de tragische geschiedenis van de Armeniërs bijna 100 jaar geleden in het Ottomaanse Rijk, nadrukkelijk distantiëren van dergelijke protesten en demonstraties en in tegendeel samen met Armeniërs de slachtoffers van de genocide herdenken.

De FAON heeft voorts, om in de toekomst problemen te voorkomen, gevraagd te bevorderen dat in het kader van het geschiedenisonderwijs de Armeense genocide aan de orde wordt gesteld. Daarbij heeft FAON gewezen op het belang van lesbrieven voor verschillende onderwijsniveau en het op het NIOD aanwezige onderwijsmateriaal over de verschillende genociden.

Bij de afsluiting van de ontmoeting werd afgesproken dat de komende tijd nauw contact wordt gehouden over een en ander alsmede over vormen waarin de Minister zijn betrokkenheid bij de Armeense gemeenschap tot uiting kan brengen.
