The wave of criminal prosecutions in Armenia is Pashinyan's way to stay in power

Experts predict an intensification of repression in Armenia. Fearing the growing popularity of political opponents after the loss of Artsakh, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan uses the main deterrent mechanism, launching a new wave of criminal prosecutions.

Thus, the commander of the 3rd Army Corps, General Grigory Khachaturov, who did not agree to surrender the territories in Tavush to Baku, was arrested on false charges. The former commander of the Artsakh Defense Army, General Mikael Arzumanyan, is being accused of surrendering Shushi. This commander could lead the resistance and thwart Aliyev’s plans for a long blockade and ethnic Armenians’ exodus from Artsakh.

In times requiring the consolidation of political forces, criminal charges have been brought against outstanding personalities of the Armenian elite: Ex-Defense Minister, the head of the Armenia faction Seyran Ohanyan, former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan, deputy chairman of former ruling Republican Party Armen Ashotyan, head of the Prosperous Armenia party Gagik Tsarukyan. The trials of Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan are ongoing.

Member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly, head of the "I Have the Honor" faction Hayk Mamijanyan made an attempt to bring the issue of repressive measures of Pashinyan’s team against opposition structures to the attention of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee.

The Council of Europe did not criticize the current government in Armenia. Obviously, Pashinyan managed to find an approach to European officials in the spirit of the times. He showed his commitment of getting out of the Kremlin’s influence.

Unleashing terror against his own people, Nikol Pashinyan demonstrates readiness to go to any measures to hold the prime minister’s position. These measures will eventually lead to a wave of criminal prosecutions that will reach 16th Prime Minister as well.
